Look at that little girl. I remember this day like it was yesterday. I was so nervous about going through my first communion. I had just moved to a new town (which I called "the country" because I thought Jefferson City was SO country compared to the "City" of Columbia - Ha!) I didn't have many friends, I definitely didn't have many Catholic friends because I was in the public school system and most of the Catholics in town went to the Catholic schools. I had been looking forward to my first communion in Columbia with the friends I had made in my weekly religion classes, but then my parents uprooted me to the middle of nowhere and now I was doing my first communion on my own.
I was convinced that everyone wore a little miniature wedding gown (like a flower girl dress) to their first communion. I wasn't really fond of that look but I certainly didn't want to stand out! Gasp! Funny how our idea of style changes as we get older. What fashionista wants to blend into the crowd? Not many. Anyway, Mom found this white dress with blue detail. It sort of has a sailor dress look to it because it ties in the front and has one of those sailor collars in the back. I liked it but I thought it was pretty casual. So I insisted on a veil. Why did I insist on a veil? It looks so silly looking back on it now. A pretty flower in my hair would have been so pretty and less pretentious. I guess I can't really call it pretentious if all the girls were wearing veils but I still think it looks silly looking back on it. Dear God, those shoes? Where did they come from? I have no memory of them. They aren't horrible, but those straps make the shoes look really awkward. Also, it is hard to tell in this picture, but I'm wearing huge glasses. I guess we all went through awkward periods, I just have a hard time believing that Sydney from The Daybook ever wore massive glasses. ;)
I had a really great day that day. My entire family came up to see me have my first communion. They made a really big deal out of it. I loved being the center of attention, getting a new dress, and having my family come celebrate me. It was even better than a birthday!

I remember my first communion, too - definitely had a white dress. I think we all go through super awkward phases. Middle school for me was awful - glasses, braces, bad haircut...but it turned out ok. :)
you look so cute!
thank you for sharing such a sweet memory!
my Niece is DYING for me to get married b/c she wants to be a flower girl in the worst way - i told her she'll have a mini-wedding @ her 1st communion :o) .. we play "wedding" all the time tho :o)

Aw what a sweet memory!
I was so nervouse for my first communion too! And it's funny that you say that everyone wore miniature wedding gowns because my mum took a piece of her wedding veil and made miniature veils for my sister and I. And we had lace gloves. And I also wiped out walking down the aisle in front of everyone. Oh, the memories...

you are so cute! I love the veil.
I remember I was really nervous for my first communion too! At the time I was living in St. Louis (Creve Coeur area) and our Catholic grade school was big enough to have two classes per grade which meant there were a lot of people who I didn't know who I was walking in with.
I too had a veil and my dress had lots of beading, sequins and fake pearls on it. If I remember correctly, it had a fake pearl necklace that was attached to the dress, it didn't even go all the way around my neck! I thought it was the most beautiful thing at the time, but looking back, like you, I wonder: what was I thinking? :)
I absolutely love this story. I love the power of memory and how life events stay with us. :)
What a sweet picture and a sweet story -- I still like a new dress and to be the center of attention :)
Aww, you look too cute!
I don't even remember my First Holy Communion! I'll have to go searching for the photos!
What a sweet picture and a sweet story! I still like getting a new dress and being the center of attention :)
First Commuion is a very special day! You appreciate these pictures more and more in time. It's amazing.
i loved this! i wore a white dress, satin skirt, lace bodice with white tights. but get this, I decided to wear white socks over my tights (i was living in ny, i'm sure i didn't want my feet to get cold!).... I don't remember being nervous, but I remember what a big deal it was for me.
thanks for sharing this with everyone, it was very enjoyable!
